Gary became a Christian during his junior year at Kalani High School. Upon graduation in 1984, he became part of the volunteer staff of Hawaii Youth for Christ under the leadership of Rev. Sam Sherrard and later became one of the youth directors of Campus Life. In 1992, he helped plant a church called Faith Christian Fellowship pastored by Mark Olmos and became the administrator in 1998. In 2001 he became the area representative for Walk thru the Bible Ministries.

He lives in Pearl City with his wife of 13 years, Deanne, with their two children, Naomi & Garrett.
